O son of man, humble yourself and lift your hands in prayer, and ready the sword: the third sword signifies a plague, indeed, it is a formidable scourge. He summons the forces against Jerusalem in the ninth year of Zedekiah's reign, referring to this as the third sword, even though numerically it is the fourth. This distinction is made because no lives were lost during the period of Jechoniah when the king willingly went to Nebuchadnezzar with his mother, wife, and those who held positions of authority, leading to his captivity in Babylon. Thus, the time of Zedekiah is rightly marked as the third era, which includes battles and military aggressions, rather than just incursions. Hence, He declares, the third sword is indeed great.

The Prophet is then informed about the need for this proclamation. I am filled with dread, for their hearts shall be shattered and the weak among their adversaries multiplied; they shall be handed over to the slaughter. Proclaim and announce that which will instill fear in them, that their hearts may crumble, meaning that the stubbornness of their hearts may be shattered through the foretelling of disasters. It is sufficient to terrify them with the knowledge that they will face death, and all the gates will be filled with the slain. Then God personifies His permissions, stating that the sword is sharp and quick to strike; as it shines brilliantly. You will surge forth like lightning, honed both to your right and to your left, and your countenance shall be lifted. The sword is keen on both edges, crafted with the highest precision, radiating brilliance akin to lightning. Therefore, declares God, forge your path in whichever direction you choose, whether to the left or the right; you will have Me as your aid. He further conveys these truths, adding:
