The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

I will unleash my fury upon you; in the flames of my anger, I will breathe upon you. I will unleash my indignation upon you, and my wrath will consume you in the fires of my fury. I will hand you over to the ruthless men who wreak havoc. You will serve as fuel for the fire; your blood will saturate your land, and you will be forgotten, for I, the Lord, have declared it. This refers to the uprising against Babylon by the Medes and Persians, who, as they besieged the city's walls, brought a multitude of siege engines. On the night of the celebration, they breached the defenses, captured the entire city, set much of it ablaze, and flooded the homes and streets with blood.
