Theodoret of Cyrus
He referred to the cup as profound due to the magnitude of the disaster and broad because of the extensive duration of seventy years, which reflected the devastation that had overtaken the city. When he labeled it a cup of consumption, he emphasized that it would be drained entirely, as Jerusalem had endured its ultimate siege. He also declared that it would bring anguish to its very core, for it had entered a state of severe distress, and he noted that it would take away the nourishing aspects, due to the repentance that followed this calamity. He stated that he would turn aside their celebrations and new moon observances, for he has declared it, says the Lord God. Furthermore, I will abolish all public gatherings and the spirit of joy, and I will bring an end to all expressions, for I am the true and just Lord.
