Theodoret of Cyrus
He referred to the cup as deep due to the magnitude of the disaster and wide because of its prolonged suffering over seventy years, reflecting the devastation that had struck the city. When he labeled it a cup of consumption, he also stated, "Thou shalt exhaust it," signifying that Jerusalem had endured its final siege. He remarked, "Thou shalt consume the loins of it," indicating the severe anguish it had experienced, and “thou shalt tear away thy teats," pointing to the repentance that arose from the calamity. "Thy feasts and thy new moons will I turn away," declares the Lord to Adonai. "I will eliminate every public gathering and all joy, and I will bring an end to speech," for I am the true and just Lord.
