Theodoret of Cyrus
I will restore the exiles of Egypt and establish them in the region of Paphur. I will bring back the captives from Egypt, settling them in the land of Paphur, while they also find their way into Othonud. This promise of liberation from captivity also foreshadows the eventual insignificance of that kingdom. Its might will be diminished: indeed, it will be humbled more than all powers, ensuring that no man is lifted above the tongues; I will make myself lowly, so that they do not multiply among the nations. The fulfillment of this prophecy is evident through historical events. The Egyptian kingdom, which was devastated by Nebuchadnezzar, experienced a revival under Cyrus the Persian but failed to reclaim its former strength. Soon after, Kambiz, Cyrus’s son, once again conquered it, bringing it under his control and imposing tribute. Meanwhile, after the complete downfall of the Egyptian monarchy, Egypt came under the rule of the Macedonian kings.
