2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

After a week, the Lord spoke to me, saying, "Son of man, I have designated you as a sentinel for the nation of Israel. You are to listen to the words that come from my mouth and communicate them to the people on my behalf. A sentinel, entrusted with proclaiming God’s messages to the community, must often remain in solitude, mourning for what he witnesses, and should not partake in the very actions he is called to condemn."

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

You are to act as a sentinel, like all those positioned on the mount, tasked with alerting him at the sight of the barbarian onslaught. Thus, you too, as if you were perched upon a designated pillar, a watchman speaking forth the prophetic message, should declare to the people what you envision and share with them my words.
