John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

What does it mean to be a watchman? A sentinel is someone who, positioned on elevated terrain while the soldiers are stationed below, carefully watches for approaching foes and signals the impending attack, preparing them for combat to prevent being easily overwhelmed. Likewise, since we often remain unaware of the dangers that surround us during our earthly existence, God's grace has ordained that the holy prophets, as if standing on a prophetic summit, proclaim in advance the impending judgment of God. This allows us, through sincere repentance and the renewal of our fallen spirits, to proactively avert the divine consequences before they strike. Thus, it is written, I have set you as a watchman for the house of Israel, that you may warn them of the coming disaster, just as one alerts others to the approach of enemies.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Son of man, I have made you a sentinel for the house of Israel, so that you may listen to the words I speak and deliver warnings. I have designated you to admonish and correct the people, proclaiming to both the just and the wicked what I have commanded, in order to encourage vigilance among the righteous and foster a spirit of repentance in the sinner.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

You are to serve as a sentinel, much like all the others positioned on the hill, tasked with informing him when the enemy approaches. Thus, you too should stand as though you are on a steadfast pillar and a herald of prophecy, sharing with the people what you anticipate, and delivering my message to them.
