You are to instruct with gentleness, seeking to enlighten those in opposition; perhaps God will grant them repentance that leads to the knowledge of the truth, enabling them to be rescued from the snares of the adversary who has ensnared them in his designs (2 Tim. 2:25-26). Cast wide the net of love, not for the purpose of allowing the lame to be lost, but to bring about his restoration; demonstrate that through your immense kindness, you will share the good that you possess; extend the sweet aroma of compassion, revealing hidden truths, and thus draw out from the depths of destruction those who are ensnared by their own thoughts.

Teach that what may be misconstrued as good due to bias or ignorance is not in harmony with the apostolic tradition; if the wayward individual heeds this guidance, as the prophet states, he ‘shall live, because he has been taught, and thou hast saved thy soul’ (cf. v. 21); however, if he refuses to accept this teaching and remains obstinate, then, to avoid bearing guilt, bear witness to it with patience and gentleness, so that the Judge does not require his soul from your hand—without hatred, without aversion, and without persecution, but with genuine and sincere love for him.

It is likely that the Prophet employed every available remedy, yet those under care remained unhealed and refused the healing offered. Therefore, God declares: And thou shalt make known to the lawless one, and he shall not turn from his way, nor from his iniquity; that lawless one shall die in iniquity, but thou shalt deliver thy soul. Thou shalt be innocent, saith God, acting as you ought and fulfilling all that is required of you. If his affliction persists without healing, he alone will bear the consequences of his disobedience. It is important to understand that, as previously stated, the lawless individual who persists in iniquity, whether there is a proclaimer or not, will face punishment. For creation itself inherently understands what is right and what should be done; furthermore, divine teaching flows abundantly, as God’s goodness employs every means available for the redemption of humanity.

Isidore of Pelusium

Wicked individuals, often outnumbering those who call them to account for their wrongdoings and challenge their actions, can lead the latter into a state of complacency, preventing them from intervening with the same courage. Thus, it is essential to blend boldness with gentleness and corrections to cultivate love, before proceeding with the admonition. Even in such scenarios, if those being corrected fail to take heed, stubbornly rejecting the guidance of those who are deserving of the highest honors—who will undoubtedly receive glory from God and respect from the wise—then let those who offer admonition endure this situation with fortitude.

They should grieve not for themselves, thinking their own perception has been clouded, but rather for the decay and folly of those they seek to help, who are so gravely misguided that they even malign their healers. "As for you, if you declare to the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, he shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul." (Ezek. 3:19)
