The Church Fathers on this verse

3 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

And look, I will fortify your forehead. The Lord tells the prophet, Your forehead has been made by Me, and I am indeed stronger than their foreheads, just as a diamond is more resilient than flint.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

See, I have bestowed upon you a face that is stronger than theirs and a forehead more resolute than theirs. I have equipped you with a countenance like that of a diamond and a forehead like flint. Do not fear them, nor be dismayed by their presence, for they are a house filled with bitterness. He then said to me, The house of Israel has a hard forehead and brazen audacity, with a heart so cruel that it can be likened to scorpions. Therefore, I have granted you a very strong face and such a forehead that no shame can conquer. This teaches us that, at times, it is an act of divine grace to withstand shamelessness and, when necessary, to strike forehead against forehead. This is given so that our modesty and the shame natural to humanity may be wary of the schemes of adversaries.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Do not be afraid of those I am sending you to. Understanding the treachery of their hearts, cast aside all apprehensions; for I will empower you to meet their challenges, providing you the strength that aligns with their concerns and labors. I will make your resolve tougher than rock, so that when you endure rebukes, assaults, and various tribulations, you will remain steadfast in your mission of proclaiming the word and in your commitment to their well-being.
