Do not be troubled, He suggests, if they refuse to hear you. Their refusal to listen stems from their unwillingness to hear Me, as the Saviour has also stated: ‘He who receives you receives Me’ (Matthew 10:40; Luke 10:16). This clearly indicates the matter of free will. Two reasons are provided for their lack of response: first, they possess a corrupted will, and second, they have hardened hearts, as noted in the Septuagint, indicating their disobedience and their repeated refusal to heed the call to salvation.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Through this, the Lord illustrated the compliance of the Gentile nations contrasted with the rebellion of Israel. He further clarified what was meant by the phrase ‘For if they will hear,’ demonstrating His awareness of their disobedience. Simultaneously, He highlighted that this disobedience arises from their volition rather than from their inherent nature. He stated, ‘The house of Israel will not listen to you, because they will not listen to me,’ which implies that one should not be troubled by their refusal to heed your words, for it ultimately reflects their resistance to Him. In essence, do not be disheartened that they will disregard your message, as their defiance stems from the obstinacy of their will, the hardness of their hearts, and the pride of their thoughts.
