Ezekiel 30:21Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharao king of Egypt: and behold it is not bound up, to be healed, to be tied up with clothes, and swathed with linen, that it might recover strength, and hold the sword.

The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

If he disregards wise counsel after gentle warnings, I will impose severe consequences upon him, stripping him of his might so that he cannot wield the instruments of battle; nonetheless, I shall bring down the king of Babylon with great force. The term muscle here represents the might of both the Egyptian and Babylonian rulers, as strength is typically associated with warfare. I will place my sword in his hand, and he will unleash it upon Egypt, leading captives away into captivity and seizing their treasures. I declare, says God, that he will be empowered to carry out judgment upon Egypt as foretold, and He reiterates this point, emphasizing what has already been stated. Therefore, it is evident from previous explanations that I shall leave this matter without further interpretation.
