The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

However, if he fails to heed wise counsel after minor warnings, I will impose severe consequences upon him, stripping him of all his might, rendering him unable to wield the instruments of battle. Yet I will bring down the king of Babylon with all my might. The term strength refers to the power of the kings, both those of Egypt and Babylon, as the use of strength is prevalent in warfare. I will place my sword in his hand, and he will direct it against Egypt, leading those taken captive back to their captivity, along with seizing their treasures. God declares that I will grant him authority to execute upon Egypt all that has been prophesied, reiterating the same to reinforce what was previously stated. Therefore, as is apparent and clear from what has been discussed, I will leave this part without further explanation.
