The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

In the first month, on the seventh day, the Lord spoke to me, declaring, O son of man, I have shattered the strength of Pharaoh, ruler of Egypt, and he will not receive any healing. His robust power will be dismantled. I will overpower the might of Pharaoh. His strength symbolizes the warriors of Pharaoh's armies. I will defeat his formidable forces.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

If he does not heed gentle corrections, I will impose severe consequences upon him, stripping him of all his strength, rendering him incapable of wielding the instruments of battle. However, I will bring down the king of Babylon with great might and authority. By using the term strength, I refer to the power of the kings of Egypt and Babylon, as muscles are typically employed in conflict. I will place my sword in his grasp, and he will unleash it upon Egypt, leading captives away captive and seizing their treasures. I will grant him, says God, the authority to carry out the judgments upon Egypt as foretold, and once again He affirms this, emphasizing with repetition what has already been declared. Therefore, it is evident and clear from the previous explanation, and I will refrain from further interpretation.
