The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

I will disperse the Egyptians across various nations, and I will fortify the strength of the king of Babylon, equipping him with a sword to sever the strength of Pharaoh. Pharaoh will lament before his slayers, mourning as one who is fatally wounded.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

If he refuses to heed wise counsel after gentle reminders, I will bring severe consequences upon him, stripping him of his strength so that he is unable to wield the instruments of battle; yet I will vanquish the king of Babylon with immense might. When I refer to muscle, I mean the power of kings, both those from Egypt and Babylon, as it is common to relate muscle to warfare. I will place my sword in his hand, allowing him to strike Egypt, capturing captives and seizing plunder. I will bestow upon him, says God, the authority to enact judgment upon Egypt in accordance with all that has been foretold, and He emphasizes this by reiterating the prior statements. Therefore, given the clarity of what has already been articulated, I will refrain from further interpretation.
