The Church Fathers on this verse

Ezekiel 31:14Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

For which cause none of the trees by the waters shall exalt themselves for their height: nor shoot up their tops among the thick branches and leaves, neither shall any of them that are watered stand up in their height: for they are all delivered unto death to the lowest parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down into the pit.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Its branches will be eradicated in every region of the earth. All the birds of the sky will perch upon it, and beneath its boughs all the creatures of the land will find rest, so that no trees in the waters may be lifted up in their splendor. These events came to pass for the king of Assyria, so that the trees of the waters, which symbolize the kings, could witness the downfall and not be exalted in their grandeur. They shall not conceal their tops among the dense foliage; in other words, they will not be inflated with arrogance among their multitude.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The downfall of his authority and the shattering of his reign will serve to instruct and instill caution in others. When they witness the fate that has befallen him, they will be reminded not to overestimate their own worth nor to elevate themselves to a power that is not rightfully theirs, mistaking the honor conferred upon them by Me as a form of nourishment or a call to independence. All have been surrendered to death. Not only the devil but also his confederates, the demons of self-rule, faced complete annihilation. Now, let us return to the narrative. It is enough to clarify that the words spoken by the Prophet are not directed solely at Nebuchadnezzar, but also at the force that influenced him and instilled his pride. Thus, God declares that Nebuchadnezzar and his companions will endure death and face the same consequences as all other humans.
