Thus declares the Sovereign Lord, "I will leave you desolate for all time in the joy of the entire earth." Yet, just as the foe rejoiced in the downfall of the house of Israel, which met its demise, so shall I bring desolation upon you. You, O Mount Seir, shall endure devastation, and all of Edom shall be laid waste, led away into captivity, for I am their God. He warns them of severe retribution, proclaiming, "While others dwell in peace and happiness, I will strike you with disaster, ensuring you find no solace even amid the suffering that others experience alongside you." Israel took comfort knowing that when Nebuchadnezzar attacked, he did not strike only them, but also their adversaries—the Tyrians, the Sidonians, the Philistines, and the Egyptians.

Yet, there is a promise that this discipline is also beneficial; for it is said, "They shall be led away, for I am the Lord their God." Therefore, this rebuke serves a purpose, as the words of the prophet Isaiah illustrate: it opens ears and leads to the understanding of their Lord, who wounds and heals.
