Ezekiel 37:23Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Nor shall they be defiled any more with their idols, nor with their abominations, nor with all their iniquities: and I will save them out of all the places in which they have sinned, and I will cleanse them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

Ezekiel, in a manner consistent with prophetic tradition and reflecting the image of David, speaks of Christ who took on human form from David's lineage. This servant portrayal, in which the Son of God assumes humanity, leads to His designation as the servant of God. Speaking through Ezekiel, God the Father proclaims: ‘One King shall be king over them all, and they shall no longer be two nations, nor shall they be divided into two kingdoms. And they shall no longer defile themselves with their idols, and with their abominations, and with all their vices; and I will deliver them out of all their dwelling places where they have sinned, and will cleanse them—and they shall be My people, and I will be their God. And My servant David shall be King over them and Shepherd of them all’ (Ezekiel 37:22-24).

These events unfolded in a transformative way under Zerubbabel, yet they came to fruition with precision and truth under our Lord Christ, for Zerubbabel served merely as a governor and leader, not a king. They will not be divided with two opposing voices, nor will there be two kings among them. I will rescue them from all their transgressions, through which they have sinned, and I will purify them, and they shall be My people, and I will be their God. My servant David will serve as prince among them, and there will be one shepherd for all. This aligns with the words of our Lord Christ in the holy Gospel: 'And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: these I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd' (John 10:16).

God identifies the Lord Christ with David because He was born of David in the flesh, but He assumed the form of a servant according to human nature. In taking on this form, He was born of a servant's nature in the flesh. The only-begotten Lord of all is not a servant; rather, He is referred to as David due to His lineage, yet He embodies the essence of a servant. When God, the Word made flesh, took on this servant-like nature, He did not relinquish His divine identity but, through His union with the divine nature, elevated our human experience. Thus, the prophetic message indicates that impiety and idolatry will vanish, the division of kingdoms will cease, and all people will be united under one sovereign, guided by one shepherd, knowing their God and Lord. They will follow My commandments and uphold My decrees. They will inhabit the land I have designated for My servant Jacob, where their ancestors dwelled, and they, along with their children and their children's children, shall dwell there for generations. David, My servant, shall rule over them forever. Let the Jewish people ponder who this everlasting king called David is. They would have to acknowledge that such titles do not apply to Zerubbabel, as he was merely a leader and not a reigning king, and his authority ended with his passing. If they attribute eternal kingship to David's lineage, they must demonstrate a reigning line from David. However, if the royal line is obscured or unknown, then one of two conclusions must be drawn: either the prophecy is deemed false or we must recognize the reign of our Lord Christ, who is David in the flesh. The Jews, I believe, would agree that the prophecy is not false. If it is indeed true, and we see no other Jewish kingdom, and the lineage of David is neither evident nor recognized, then the Son of God, who is from David according to the flesh, reigns as descendant of David, possessing eternal sovereignty. Thus both the lack of understanding and faith among the Jews and our knowledge of God are clearly revealed. This assertion is corroborated by what follows. God declares:
