Jerome of Stridon
When the prophet delivered the message he had been instructed to convey, a swift transformation occurred; the bones began to come together, connected by sinews, clothed in flesh, and enveloped in skin.
And I prophesied as he had commanded me: and as I prophesied there was a noise, and behold a commotion: and the bones came together, each one, its joint.
4 Church Fathers comment on this verse
When the prophet delivered the message he had been instructed to convey, a swift transformation occurred; the bones began to come together, connected by sinews, clothed in flesh, and enveloped in skin.
The prophet, in obedience to God's directive, delivered the message he was instructed to share, which was accompanied by divine action. Just as the trumpet heralded God's presence, the voice indicated the engagement of angels fulfilling God’s purpose. And I beheld, as the Prophet declared, that the bones were coming together, arranging themselves in their original form and structure.
Reflect on the prophecy of Ezekiel regarding the valley abundant with human bones. Recall how, in accordance with his vision, the bones came together, joined in unity, clothed with sinews, flesh, and skin, yet still lacked the Spirit within them. The Lord instructed the Prophet to proclaim the Spirit, and upon his speaking, life was breathed into them. This valley of bones symbolizes humanity in its fallen state, existing in separation from God, devoid of life and the Spirit, as the Apostle states.
The message delivered by the prophet, conveying the directive of the Lord, was swiftly met with movement. The bones began to stir, accompanied by a sound and a tremor in the earth, akin to the thunderous charge of a rushing cavalry. The bones, once strewn carelessly across the landscape, began to find their respective positions to reform the body that they had once inhabited prior to death, with each bone reconnecting to its counterpart as it was in the flesh before it faced mortality.
