Jerome of Stridon
Wherefore I have made them impure, and will hand them over to strangers who will plunder them, and to the wicked of the earth who will prey upon them, thus they shall be defiled. Because of the gold, silver, and luxurious garments I bestowed upon them, they have fashioned for themselves detestable idols and statues; I have made them unclean and worthless in their eyes. In contrast to this, Simmachus translated it as abomination to emphasize the repulsiveness of idols. He asserts that I will surrender them into the hands of their foes so they may ravage everything; I will not merely defile them, but reveal that those objects, once considered sacred, are now desecrated. We too fall into the grasp of enemies and strangers to God when we allow our treasures to become idols, and when the wicked or destroyers of the earth seize our glory, subjugating us to their will.
