Ezekiel 8:6Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And he said to me: Son of man, dost thou see, thinkest thou, what these are doing, the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here, that I should depart far off from my sanctuary? and turn thee yet again and thou shalt see greater abominations.

Jerome of Stridon

Do not assume that I am being unfair by departing from the temple and allowing the city to face destruction; consider the actions taking place within the temple. When you observe these events, do not think this marks the culmination of wrongdoing—more will be revealed to you. This can indeed be related to our own Jerusalem and temple, as we, like Ophni and Phinehas, engage in idolatries within God's sanctuary, committing spiritual unfaithfulness with those dedicated to the Lord’s ministry. We take for ourselves the components of His offerings, utilizing them for our followers and servants, all for selfish gain. If the visible corruption we witness is so significant, how much more should we perceive the profound realities that lie beyond human comprehension?

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Do you not observe, says God, that through their own wrongdoings they incur punishment? Due to their evil ways and failure to honor Me, they will be cast out from My sacred presence, in line with David's prophecy, ‘Those who remove themselves from You will perish’ (Psalm 72:27).
