From Canaan originated Sidon, the city that lends its name to Sidon in Phoenicia. Following this was Arakei, the founder of Arkas, a town located across from Tripoli at the base of Lebanon. Nearby stood another city known as Sin, which, after being devastated in various conflicts, left only its former name associated with the area. The Arads claimed the island of Arad, which lies adjacent to the Phoenician coast, separated by a narrow channel. The Samaritans possess the renowned city situated on the Syrian heights, known as Emessa. Amath continues to bear its ancient designation in contemporary times, recognized by both Jews and Syrians. Following Alexander’s reign in the East, the Macedonians renamed the city Epiphanius.

Some believe that this name refers to Antioch, while others, though erroneously, propose that it was the designation for Emas, the initial stop along the route from Antioch to Edessa, contending that it was the same city the ancients referred to as Emath.
