The concept of a jealous God is evident throughout Scripture, where the people of Israel and the church of the Lord are frequently depicted as His bride. This portrayal emphasizes that the covenant God is the bridegroom, whose jealousy stems from His deep love for the church; He desires it to remain pure and cannot permit it to pursue the ways of false deities and abominable practices. It is noteworthy that in verse 13, the term for grove, asherah, differs from that used in verse 33 of chapter 21 in Genesis, which refers to Abraham planting an eshel near Beer-sheba. It is reasonable to interpret asherah as a wooden post erected in groves to honor Astarte, similar to how a stone pillar was dedicated to Baal. In 2 Samuel 14:23, it is mentioned that the men of Judah established an asherah beneath a large tree for shade.
