These words serve as the closing remarks of the previous genealogical narrative concerning the descendants of Noah's three sons, whose names have come to be associated with the nations and languages known to the chronicler and merit special consideration for their destinies. The chronicler identifies 14 descendants within the lineage of Japheth, 31 in that of Ham, and 27 in the line of Shem. The various groups of peoples that have emerged from these descendants of Noah and spread across the earth are referred to by the historian as 'islands,' indicating that each group existed independently, much like islands in the ocean, remaining distinct from one another in terms of borders, languages, systems, and traditions. This separation and distribution of nations primarily resulted from the miraculous event of language confusion, which is elaborated upon in the subsequent verses.
