4 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Observe how through the renaming of a location, he aims to ensure its remembrance for all time. The Scripture states, “Named, the God who sees me.” Notice how the servant, in her distress, gradually grows in wisdom and expresses her gratitude for the kindness shown to her, seeking to reciprocate in whatever way she can for such profound care.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

When he spoke to her, she experienced a vision within a vision, as God manifested to her as an angel. Consequently, she named the treasure the treasure of the Living One who sees me.

Philaret of Moscow (Drosdow)

19th centuryChurch Father

Be'er-lahai-roi. This translates to the Fountain of the Living One who observes me, or the Fountain of the living God of sight. He who lives is the designation of the true God, as highlighted in contrast to the deities associated with death, as noted in scripture (Hab. 3:10, Dan. 12:7; Ps. 105:28).

Didymus the Blind

4th centuryTeacher of the Church

It is beneficial that the occurrence of the teaching word was manifested between Kadesh and Bared, as Kadesh is interpreted as 'holy' and Bared as 'lightning.' Thus, in this space, the sacred individual, who shares in the contemplation of divine truths, encounters the brilliance of enlightenment. This divine guidance comes to fruition, for Thy lightnings have illumined the universe (Psalm 79:19 LXX; cf. Psalm 96:4).
