John Chrysostom

Subsequently, the monarch, recognizing the remarkable humility of the just man, rewarded the patriarch with royal generosity. The Scriptures state that "Abimelech took small and large cattle, and slaves and maidservants, and gave them to Abraham; and returned to him Sarah his wife." Observe, dearly beloved, the wise provision of God. The one who trembled at the prospect of death and sought every possible means to escape it not only eluded death but also gained extraordinary approval and was glorified beyond his expectations. Such are the deeds of the Lord! God not only rescues those who strive to endure the challenges presented to them with grace, but within those very hardships, He provides such solace that we completely forget the trials and instead inherit a multitude of blessings. Consider, then, the benefits the king grants to the righteous.

Abimelech's behavior contrasted sharply with that of Pharaoh, who initially agreed but later turned against Moses, disregarded God's directive, and failed to adhere to it. In contrast, the king promptly summoned Abraham, restored his wife to him, acknowledged his wrongdoing, and compensated for the humiliation he caused by having looked upon another man's wife.
