In this situation, Sarah's actions were not unjust but rather quite righteous, to such a degree that God Himself affirmed her words. The patriarch, displaying love and concern for Ishmael, received Sarah's response with discontent. As stated in the Scriptures, it appeared very grievous to Abraham regarding his son. His concern did not extend to Hagar, but rather centered on a young man who had reached maturity. This illustrates the remarkable compassion of the merciful God. He recognized that Sarah’s frustration regarding the status of the children was a typical human sentiment. However, Abraham struggled to accept the banishment of Ishmael and Hagar without emotional turmoil. Although he chose not to oppose Sarah out of his profound humility, the situation felt heavy and intolerable to him.

The heavenly Abraham, complying with the principles of love for his offspring, showed compassion toward Ishmael.

Abraham had a profound desire to have Ishmael as his heir since he did not see a difference between his sons. Thus, it is said, This voice was harsh before Abraham regarding his son.

Joy is swiftly followed by jealousy. Sarah bore a son and weaned him. Upon witnessing the son of the handmaid mock her son Isaac, she approached Abraham and said: Cast out the handmaid and her son; for the son of the handmaid shall not inherit alongside my son Isaac (Gen. 21:9-10). This request seemed difficult for Abraham, even though his son was born from a servant woman. You must not engage with a maid, lest you have a child with her, for your wife will not permit her son to share in such an inheritance. Consider how this undermines the sanctity of marriage! Indeed, if you have erred and fathered a son, it is preferable to send away the maid and her child than to lose your noble wife or your rightful son. If you are uncertain, if you wish to ignore your wife’s counsel, and if this command appears burdensome, remember God’s message to Abraham.
