Observe how Jacob initially demonstrated humility, prompting Laban to respond sincerely. Jacob acknowledges, stating that since your presence, I have been blessed with God's abundant grace.

Cyrill of Alexandria

Laban was determined to keep Jacob with him because Jacob was an excellent shepherd, asserting that he had received divine favor through Jacob's presence. Despite Jacob's work with Laban's daughters reaching a specific conclusion, Laban was unwilling to let him depart. He claimed that his blessings, particularly the remarkable growth of his flock, were directly linked to Jacob. The world may not openly acknowledge its deep need for God, yet it instinctively understands that all essentials for life and abundance are bestowed upon it by the Lord.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Following the birth of Joseph, Jacob approached Laban and requested, “Grant me my wives and children, for I will serve you to earn my release.” However, Laban, motivated by his own self-interest rather than any affection for Jacob, responded, “I recognize that the Lord has favored me because of you. If you agree to share your earnings with me, I will compensate you” (Genesis 30:28).

In Laban, we observe the tangible moment of the blessing bestowed upon Jacob: those who bless you will be blessed (Gen. 27:29).
