2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

In response to the well-known actions of Simeon and Levi, Jacob expressed his concerns by saying, "I have few men; they shall gather against me, they shall smite me, and I and my house shall be destroyed" (Gen. 34:30). His words revealed the immense fear and timidity that overtook him. In light of this, the merciful Lord reassures him, saying, "Though you proclaim, 'I have few men,' understand that your descendants will flourish and expand, becoming so significant that nations and kings will arise from them. Not only will you be preserved, but you and your offspring will also inherit this entire land."

Philaret of Moscow (Drosdow)

19th centuryChurch Father

The territory that I bestowed upon Abraham and Isaac will be granted to you. This serves as a renewed clarification of the covenant, as Esau and his descendants have already been barred from it.
