The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Consider the profound love he exhibits for Joseph. To clarify that his reference to being "childless" does not imply Simeon or Benjamin, he clearly stated beforehand: "But God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, so that he will release your other brother and Benjamin." He acknowledges that although they are alive, he feels bereft as a father due to the loss of Joseph. Reflect on his deep allegiance to Joseph; despite being surrounded by numerous children, he regarded himself as childless because of Joseph's absence.
