Serve the feast. They treated him with distinction, as if he were the sovereign and lord of all Egypt, giving special attention to him and to the Egyptians dining with him; for the Egyptians do not partake of a meal with the Hebrews, as this is considered detestable to them.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

During the meal, Joseph positioned himself in a unique manner, and the Egyptians also adopted their own distinct way of reclining. Joseph's siblings were likewise assigned specific places to recline.

Ignatij (Briantchaninow)

A distinct meal was arranged for him, along with another for the sons of Jacob and yet another for the Egyptians who were present that day at the nobleman's home. As recorded in Scripture, the Egyptians could not share a table with the Hebrews; as their customs dictated, they found sheep herders to be detestable (Genesis 46:34).
