The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Observe the thoughtful counsel he offers to his brothers, not simply or lightly, but with the intention of ensuring their safety and keeping them from associating with the Egyptians. Since the Egyptians held a deep disdain for those who lived as shepherds, and given that Joseph's brothers lacked knowledge of Egyptian customs, Joseph wisely suggests that they reveal their occupations at the outset. This strategy would allow them to be distinct from the Egyptian populace and secure a suitable land where they could dwell safely.
