John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Observe the wisdom with which he counsels his brothers, not merely offering a casual suggestion but genuinely seeking their greater protection and aiming to keep them distinct from the Egyptians. Since the Egyptians held a strong disdain for those who tended flocks, and considering that Joseph's brothers lacked any formal Egyptian education, Joseph therefore recommends that they reveal their professions early. This way, under the guise of such a reasonable explanation, they could secure a separation from the most desirable land, allowing them to live safely.
