5 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Observe how the just one finds ample solace in all circumstances. Just as the dove that returned with an olive branch symbolized hopeful anticipation, so too does the absence of the released dove serve as a compelling affirmation that it has discovered perfect peace and that the waters have entirely receded. For a deeper understanding of this righteousness, consider the subsequent insights.

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

In due course, he recognized that all the water had been evaporated from the earth, leaving the land parched along with all its inhabitants. Yet it is also foretold that among the faithful, some will turn away in the latter days, as I previously mentioned. This is symbolized by the third and final dove that is dispatched but chooses not to return, instead choosing to stay.

Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

For an extended period, the remains of the unrighteous have often been safeguarded from earthly powers and various forms of suffering, while the spirits of the righteous have continually faced the harshness of humanity until the culmination of time. This reality confirms the words of the apostle previously mentioned: All who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus shall be persecuted (2 Tim. 3:12), and those who exhibit greater integrity will invariably endure even harsher persecution. This state of affairs will persist until the flood recedes, at which point both the raven and the dove will find themselves confined in the same vessel.

Philaret of Moscow (Drosdow)

19th centuryChurch Father

The gradual receding of the waters and the complete end of the flood is expertly conveyed by the author through various stages. In the third stage, the waters of the earth diminished significantly. Noah realized this through inference, as the dove he released for a third time did not come back to him.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

In this instance, the dove did not come back to the ark because she discovered numerous dry areas in the mountains and fields. As she soared from one spot to another, she ventured so far from the ark that she could no longer see it and became lost in finding her way back.
