The Church Fathers on this verse

Hosea 5:1Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Hear ye this, O priests, and hearken, O ye house of Israel, and give ear, O house of the king: for there is a judgment against you, because you have been a snare to them whom you should have watched over and a net spread upon Thabor.

Douay-Rheims

Listen to these offerings and call out to the house of Israel and the royal family, for judgment looms over you. Just as you have surrounded the lookout, and as the thorns grow rampant in Ithaburia, which the fishers have trampled down. First, He admonishes Judas for being to Israel a ‘whirlwind of the spirit,’ as previously mentioned. Then, He directs His rebuke toward the creators of deceit and lies, those responsible for their own painful insensitivity. These individuals were falsely designated as priests, not true descendants of Levi, but rather those who acquired the sacred role for monetary gain and who worshipped idols. As written about Jeroboam, ‘whosoever will, execute his hand, and be a priest on high’ (3 Kings 13:33).

This message is aimed squarely at the priests and the royal house, with Israel itself complicit in these transgressions. Some engaged in actions that bolstered idolatry, constructing altars and making offerings, thereby paving the path to ruin for the misguided. However, the rulers were the chief architects of this deception. Thus, He also addresses them, ‘As they were a guard.’ He refers to the populace who fall under the oversight of the priests, if only they were genuine servants of God, and the leaders themselves, for they govern their followers. The subjects look to their leaders for guidance, following their will. Consequently, He asserts that you have become a snare for those entrusted to your care or those who aspire to emulate you. You have become ‘like a mountain spread out on Ithaviria’ (Tabor). This renowned mountain in Galilee is known for its significant height and dense foliage, teeming with a rich variety of wildlife.

The guards surrounded them, symbolizing the genuine prophets. Just as the bosom spreads wide on Tabor, where they sought to catch creatures.

Listen, O priests, give attention, O house of Israel, and pay close attention, O royal house, for you are about to face judgment. You have become a snare for the watchmen and a net spread across Tabor, leading offerings into the depths. The priests of Levi are summoned for judgment, but not solely because they serve as priests to the ten tribes and the monarchy, as it is not the people who have named them thus. Likewise, the priests of Baal and the four hundred and fifty prophets who faced death at the hands of Elijah, and later by Jehu son of Namsi, in the company of Jonadab son of Rechab, were likewise designated as priests.

Moreover, Israel, meaning the people, is called to account; none are exempt, as both the people and the kings who have led them astray and established false priests must jointly hear the truth of their actions and understand why they are given over to their adversaries.

I appointed you as guardians and leaders of the people, raising you to the highest honor, allowing you to mislead them instead. You have become a trap, accurately described not as guardians and leaders but as the trappers themselves. Your net was spread on Mount Tabor, which the LXX renders as Ιταβύριον, reflecting their tradition of translating Hebrew names into Greek; for instance, they frequently translate Edom, or Esau, and Seir as Idumea. Mount Tabor is a high, rounded mountain, evenly contoured on all sides, nestled among the plains of Galilee. It is noted in the psalms: Tabor and Hermon rejoice in Thy name (Psalms 88:13). This mountain, where birds are often caught in traps, is noted in Jeremiah (ch. 46), where the LXX translates it as Itabyrium. The offerings, he states, were swept away into the depths so that none might turn back or raise their heads in repentance, leading instead to death. Kings and priests have obstructed the people from entering the temple in Jerusalem, which is why it is said that they pulled the sacrifices into the abyss.

The people are metaphorically charged, lest they presume themselves blameless, as diminished by the actions of the kings and priests, whom we refer to as deceivers. The rulers are also indicted for ensnaring the people, betraying their role as guardians of the Church by leading them astray. On the grand and splendid Mount Tabor, representing the dawn of light, they set a trap designed to ensnare all and draw those caught into destruction, making them victims for demonic sacrifices and consigning them to the abyss, where they would remain devoid of the ability to repent and return to the house of God, the Church. Some interpret Tabor to signify a trench or cistern, suggesting that the heretics constructed a pit for themselves, ultimately falling into the very trap they devised.

Pay attention to these warnings, you priests and all the people in the royal courts, listen closely to what is being proclaimed. For the verdict is against you, as you surround the guard, and as the sea spreads across Ithaviria, trampled by those who cast their nets; I will summon you all before My judgment. You have set up countless wrongs against My messengers, like fishermen preparing their traps, and similar to those who lay out equipment in Ithaviria—where this land is teeming with various creatures—you devise wicked schemes against the prophets I send to guide your salvation. I have designated the assembly of prophets as sentinels. Thus, He also declared to Ezekiel: I have appointed you as a watchman for the house of Israel (Ezekiel 3:17). Consequently, He declares that He will enact judgment upon Ephraim and Israel, that is, upon the entire populace; for they have turned away and defiled themselves, neglecting My service.

Shepherds partake of the purest waters when they draw from the streams of truth, thinking correctly. However, to muddy those waters with their actions is to hinder the practice of sacred reflection through sinful acts. The sheep are affected by the disturbed waters created by the feet of the shepherds when those in lesser authority fail to heed the teachings they receive, instead choosing to mimic the wicked behaviors they witness. Those shepherds who yearn for the truths articulated in words yet are led astray by their actions are akin to ingesting filth from tainted sources. Hence, it is also recorded, “The prophet is the net of the fowler” (Hos. 5:1).
