The Church Fathers on this verse

Isaiah 30:14Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And it shall be broken small, as the potter's vessel is broken all to pieces with mighty breaking, and there shall not a sherd be found of the pieces thereof, wherein a little fire may be carried from the hearth, or a little water be drawn out of the pit.

Douay-Rheims

Cyrill of Alexandria

He seeks to demonstrate that their refusal to heed the warnings of the holy prophets will inevitably lead to dire consequences for them, as they place their faith in falsehoods and foolishly follow every whim that arises. Since you have disregarded the messages of the prophets, labeling them as mere illusions, and wickedly declare, “Take away the word of the Lord from us," this sin will come upon you like the siege of a captured city, and it shall occur swiftly; a city, I emphasize, shattered like fragile pottery into so many pieces that each fragment is rendered worthless, incapable of sustaining fire or even providing a minimal supply of water. He implies that the disobedient will endure punishments and disasters that will reduce them to a state of profound misery, with none among them escaping this unfortunate fate.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

His downfall will be akin to the shattering of a clay pot, destroyed without compassion, similar to the breaking of an unfired earthenware vessel.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Thus declares the Lord, the Holy One of Israel: Because you have disregarded this message and placed your faith in injustice and false hopes, leaning upon them; this transgression will be to you like a fissure in a towering wall, ready to collapse. For it shall swiftly bring about your ruin when you least expect it. It will be shattered like a fragile vessel broken with great force—so violently that not a single piece will remain to ignite a fire or to draw a small amount of water from a pool. As you have previously said, "Let the Holy One of Israel depart from us," or as the Seventy render it, "Remove the word of Israel from us"; therefore the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, speaks contrary to your wish to recognize Him merely as a chastiser, whom you scorned when He pleaded with you.

You have put your trust in the injustices and deceptions of Egypt and leaned on their boastfulness and strife, as translated by Simmachus and Theodotion; thus this sin shall be accounted to you. You will find yourselves like the wall of an immensely strong city that collapses suddenly, unparalleled in its devastation, as the LXX translates. The Hebrew conveys that just as it is difficult to mend a breach in a high wall, resulting in great destruction and loss of beauty; so too will calamity come upon you unexpectedly. Moreover, as a fragile pottery piece, when shattered with tremendous force, is reduced to mere fragments, leaving barely a remnant capable of igniting a flame or retrieving a bit of water from a hollow or a pool; so it will be for you when you seek refuge in Egypt while under the pursuit of Nebuchadnezzar—you shall face annihilation and ruin. Furthermore, heretics and every doctrine contrary to the truth place their hopes in wrongfulness and deceit, and murmur against their Creator. Thus, the city of their wickedness, founded by Cain, shall meet destruction, and swift ruin shall overtake it, overtaken by the hands of the church, resulting in such devastation that nothing will remain to rekindle the extinguished fire or provide even a little impure water to the parched nations.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

He predicts the downfall of the Babylonians and the bondage of the Chaldeans. He states that they will endure this fate "for your sake, because they failed to understand that their previous victory was by my design, but they were led into captivity because I turned away from you."
