But have said: No, but we will flee to horses: therefore shall you flee. And we will mount upon swift ones: therefore shall they be swifter that shall pursue after you.

Cyrill of Alexandria

Your stronghold has proven to be futile, and despite your refusal to heed the call, you assert that you will escape on steeds; thus, you shall indeed flee. You boast of being mounted on swift horses, yet it will be the swift footed who will pursue you. From the shout of one, a thousand will scatter, and from the cry of five, many will flee, until you are left desolate, like a staff on a mountain or a banner hoisted on a hill. Although you have experienced the futility of relying on false deities and observed their impotence, still you have chosen disobedience.

For when you received the instruction not to venture into Egypt but rather to trust faithfully in Him who offers redemption, you chose not to listen, insisting instead on escaping on horseback, imagining that fleeing from Judea would suffice for your salvation. Yet, the swift will indeed be those who pursue you, fierce and relentless, instilling terror within you; the spirit of disobedience will sink into profound cowardice, as even one shout from an adversary will send a thousand fleeing, and a mere five voices will cause multitudes among the Jewish ranks to scatter. They will encounter a calamity so great that it will be unmistakable to all; it will stand out as clearly as a mast raised upon a mountain or a banner displayed on a hill. A banner and a mast signify a structure erected on high ground, marked with signs that inform commanders whether they are blessed with victory or need to gather their forces for critical counsel.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Thus declares the Lord, the Holy One of Israel: when you turn back to Me, salvation will come to you. Do not say instead, "We will mount horses and escape swiftly." For because of this, you will scatter, and those who are swift will be your pursuers, until you are left isolated like a solitary peak on a mountain or like a banner waving on a hill. The prophets spoke to the people of Israel, saying, "When you breathe in repentance, then you will find salvation. Your strength will reside in faith. Yet you have said, "No, we will ride on horses and swiftly flee away."

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Thus declares the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel: If you turn back and find rest, you will be delivered; your strength lies in stillness and trust. Yet you were unwilling, saying, "No, we will ride on swift steeds," and so you shall flee; "We will hasten on swift horses," and so your pursuers will be swifter. You will scatter before a single foe in fear, even before five. The Holy One, the Lord God, speaks through me, as well as through Jeremiah, assuring you that if you turn from your sins and abandon the wicked designs you've embraced, and remain in Judah without fearing the might of the Babylonians but instead honoring my commands, you will find salvation.

You have rejected the teachings of life, declaring in hopelessness, “It will not be as you say; we will escape swiftly to the Egyptians.” However, the Babylonians will pursue you more rapidly, and terror will grip Egypt; for a single Chaldean will overpower many Egyptians, and against five adversaries, a multitude will scatter in fear, just as it is written in Deuteronomy: The Lord will make you a terror before your enemies; you will flee from them by one path, and you shall flee in seven directions and be scattered among all the kingdoms of the earth. In a symbolic interpretation, as conveyed in the translation of the Seventy, the divine message calls all sinners, especially the heretics, to turn back; for if they repent from their sins, they will be saved and understand their previous misguided hopes. Meanwhile, in this call to repentance, they instead place their faith in false guides and an unfaithful world; unwilling to heed God's word, they engage with the Egyptians, delighting in the speed of those whom the Lord has instructed not to multiply. Thus, the leaders will swiftly pursue them, and the voice of one warrior or even five cannot withstand a disorderly throng of a thousand fleeing.
