John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

The transgressors in Zion were filled with dread; the wicked were seized by fear. The cause of their delivery to the tormenting foes has been eradicated, leaving nothing to obstruct them. Who among us can endure a consuming fire? Who among us can withstand an everlasting blaze? The prophet is believed to have spoken this concerning the return from exile; however, it appears that a glimpse of the future is also implied here. Who among us can survive the eternal flame? This fire is what Christ referred to as the eternal realm, for it has no conclusion.

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Who will inform you that the flames are raging? Who will announce to you the everlasting dwelling? In these statements, He reveals that those who act unjustly against Christ will face profound and inescapable retribution, becoming the fuel for fire at the day of reckoning. Indeed, He declared: “Amen, I say unto you, He that believeth in the Son hath everlasting life; but he that believeth not in the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth upon him” (John 3:36; cf. John 3:15, 16 and John 6:40).

For the unyielding and rebellious, an eternal destiny shall be proclaimed; a fire has been designated for them, which burns perpetually, just as the prophet reminds us regarding those who perished in their sins: “their worm shall not pass away, and their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be to the shame of all flesh” (Is. 66:24).

Ephraem the Syrian

In Zion, the lawless—specifically the Assyrians—were struck with dread by the wrath of God and the sword of the Lord that affected them. Additionally, the Israelites who lost hope in salvation were engulfed in fear and great terror. He will receive the fearfulness of the ungodly, namely the idolaters and those who shun the true faith, who spoke blasphemies against the God of the Hebrews during this conflict. Who among us can abide in the devouring fire? Who among us can reside with the consuming fire? Who can approach God, referred to in Scripture as a consuming fire? (Isaiah 30:27). Who will draw near to this fire?

Isidore of Pelusium

5th centuryChurch Father

He who beheld the Seraphim proclaiming, ‘Who will inform you that fire is ablaze?’ (Is. 33:14), what else could he declare but the reality of Gehenna, the eternal nature of souls, and the resurrection of bodies? Therefore, do not dismiss the words of Scripture that have been shared with you as mere stories, but awaken to the truth, for we have the opportunity to do so while we are still in this life. God desires not the death of the sinner, but rather that he turn from his sinful path and embrace a life of righteousness (Ezekiel 18:32). For if we approach His presence with confession (Psalm 94:2), that is, if we seek justification through our deeds before the appointed time, we will be granted mercy at the Judgment. Indeed, as I have stated, the will of the Creator must be acknowledged as more potent than any evidence we may present.

Verecundus

6th centuryTeacher of the Church

He gazed, causing nations to tremble; the ancient peaks were shattered (Hab. 3:6). The vision of the Lord softened the apathetic and transformed the dense into a flowing stream, illustrating Isaiah's proclamation that God is a living fire—not here to annihilate with death, but to purify. Who among you can endure a consuming fire? Who can withstand an eternal flame? Thus, anyone He gazes upon or who feels His warmth is softened without delay. Consequently, in later times, as the Lord gazed upon the nations in mercy and deemed them worthy of Christ's redemption, humanity ultimately cast aside their stubbornness.
