Isaiah 9:16Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And they that call this people blessed, shall cause them to err: and they that are called blessed, shall be thrown down, headlong.

The Church Fathers on this verse

5 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

They have not revealed their presence until this moment, but they will ultimately come to light. Currently, they may seduce, yet in time, everyone will see them for who they truly are. Additionally, he states that they will lead him astray; although they may deceive in the present, their true nature will become apparent later.

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

He declares that those who praise the favored among these men do so merely to benefit themselves at my expense. The Jewish leaders, entrusted with the sacred tabernacle and charged with offering sacrifices as prescribed by the law, led the people under their care to present gifts, declaring blessed those who contributed generously. However, their intentions were rooted in selfishness rather than genuine reverence for God, aiming instead at their own gain. Consequently, they boastfully consider how they will continue to profit. Being driven by an unquenchable thirst for wealth, they failed to guide the people in their duty to honor the Lord of all by adhering to the law; instead, they encouraged offerings that went beyond their means.

As a result, they rejected faith in Christ, effectively barring others from entering the kingdom of heaven themselves. They understood that when the shadow of the law faded and the message of the gospel was embraced, the era of symbolic ministry and sacrificial blood offerings would entirely come to an end, rendering those sacrifices meaningless with the advent of spiritual ministry. This portended a total dismantling of their relentless greed.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

In other words, the deceitful priests and false prophets will turn out to be sycophants, leading the people to a state of spiritual complacency akin to being entrapped in Babylon.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

He addressed the leaders and now includes the influential and the masses, indicating that both instructive guides and learners, those who are learned and those who are uneducated, shall face the same fate. The individuals who proclaim the people as fortunate are misleading, and those whom they label as blessed do so not out of genuine virtue but rather due to the benefits they offer, and thus will meet their end with ruin. Hence, we also encounter the passage: ‘My people, those who call you blessed deceive you and distort the paths of your feet’ (Is. 8:12). He will eliminate both the elder leader and the deceitful prophet, marked by his falsehood (Is. 9:15) - equally bringing judgment upon both instructors and students. Some are condemned for extolling sinners for their gifts, while others are doomed for their inability to recognize their own shortcomings and their lack of repentance when receiving accolades.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

These are the same deceitful leaders prophesied to face destruction in the earlier verse. They earned this retribution due to their selfishness, manipulating the community with insincere praise. They pleased the crowds and indulged their desires and immoral behaviors to exploit them, aiming to benefit from their vulnerability and satisfy their insatiable greed. In a similar manner, the Pharisees during Christ's time, who exploited widows and took advantage of their circumstances, reflected this same character (Matthew 23:14).
