The Lord spoke to me, instructing, "Go and acquire a linen loincloth and wear it around your waist, but do not allow it to come into contact with water." In these actions, the prophet is to symbolize the sins of the people and their impending captivity. Initially, God directs the prophet to purchase a linen loincloth that has not been washed or soaked. Following this, the Lord tells him to tie it around himself. Later, he must remove it and journey to the Euphrates River, where he is to bury it and leave it until it decomposes. Through this imagery, God reveals the scorn experienced by His people in Egypt and the honor and magnificence they were adorned with after their liberation from slavery.
