The Church Fathers on this verse

4 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

The sustenance will last eternally, referring to your sexual immorality and lack of accountability for your actions. This means that by not yielding to wickedness, you can avoid retribution, and by leading a righteous life, you will triumph over your adversaries. These are the words you have spoken. Observe the effort and care she dedicates to her actions.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

"Will His anger last forever, or will it remain indefinitely?" Does God maintain His anger eternally? The prophet illustrates that God will not harbor His wrath eternally. Just as He showed mercy to those who sinned in the past and freed them from bondage, He will also save those of us who have sinned and surrendered to wrongdoing. He will grant us compassion and absolve our transgressions upon witnessing our repentance. "These things you have spoken, and you have committed wrongdoing, and you have been capable of doing them." Consider that all the evil you could have committed, you have pursued without fear or shame.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

From this moment forward, call out to me, ‘My Father, You guide my purity! Will Your anger last forever, or will it come to an end? Those who refuse to turn back to their Father, let them be filled with shame and listen: from now on, direct your cries to me, ‘My Father, You are the guardian of my purity! He Himself unites your spirit to His love, instructing you in prayer and repentance. Yet, the more merciful He is in revealing the path to salvation after sin, the more wretched is the sinner who chooses not to seek healing from her wounds. Consider, you have spoken and acted wickedly and insolently. Rather than expressing true contrition, you have uttered blasphemies filled with pride; you have brought your malevolent intentions to fruition and have demonstrated your defiance against your Creator, claiming you can execute what you have declared.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Will the sustenance last eternally? That is, your deceit and lightheartedness in communication. Or will it remain secured in triumph? Do you believe that you will achieve victory on your own? Then He speaks with rebuke. These things you have articulated, and you have done wrong, and you have been capable of doing them; in other words, you assumed you could jest and escape, daring to engage in such wickedness. Following this, the Prophet recounts what the Lord revealed to him during the reign of King Josiah:
