John Chrysostom

Behold, she continually engages in unfaithfulness in all these matters: to Me you shall return, yet you will not return. The prophet is informed that this punishment is justified: go to every high mountain. Then He demonstrates His goodness and compassion. Continually engaging in infidelity has led her to her own destruction, as she failed to align her life with divine law from the very beginning and, despite her wrongdoing, refused to repent. Thus, the severity of the punishment for the tribe of Judah shall be intensified. Observing the transgression, He remarks on the corruption of her sister and the consequences she faced for it; yet Judah did not refrain from emulating the wickedness but chose to follow the path of her.

Jerome of Stridon

The punishment faced by some serves as a means of healing for others. In the case of an executed murderer, he receives justice for his actions, while others find a remedy for the wrongdoing. Similarly, when the ten tribes, known as Israel, were taken captive by the Assyrians and relocated to Media, the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, who should have feared a similar fate and earnestly turned to God, went beyond the iniquities of the ten tribes. They immersed themselves in idolatry to such an extent that they erected a statue of Baal within the temple of God, which Ezekiel denounced as an idol provoking the jealousy of the Lord. He presents imagery of two sisters, symbolizing their shared lineage from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, labeling one as apostate and the other as treacherous.

The first sister completely turned away from God, immediately engaging in the worship of golden calves in Dan and Bethel, while the second, possessing the Temple and a reverence for the true God, gradually strayed from the Lord, influenced by her sister, and thus was deemed treacherous. In a profound sense, this serves as a prophecy concerning heretics who, misled by false knowledge, ascend the mountain of pride and, yielding to the temptations of the flesh, engage in immoral acts under every pleasant tree. When they submit to the devil for the sake of bodily destruction, it often occurs that the house of Judah—a representation of confession and genuine faith—is not discouraged by their example but rather becomes defiled through their easy immorality, committing spiritual adultery with stones and trees while adhering to doctrines opposed to God. If a church leader attempts to enlighten those who have strayed, seeking to sever the unhealthy parts of the body and lead the betrayers of the truth to repentance, yet they persist in their former iniquities under the guise of ecclesiastical truth, it could be said of them, “In all these things, her sister Judah, the wayward, has not turned back to Me with all her heart, but only in deceit.” This prophecy was given during the reign of Josiah, the righteous king, under whom Jeremiah began his ministry.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

As a result, the Jewish people brought destruction upon themselves through their choices, as they did not embrace the life that the law offers from the outset, and after committing evil, they showed no desire to repent. This serves to reinforce the Prophet's charges against the tribe of Judah. "And Judah saw his sister Judah's offense." (Jer.

2:8) "And I have witnessed that among all those in whom the house of Israel has been unfaithful: I will release him and place the book of anointing in his hand; neither did the sinner of Judah fear, nor did his sister Judah, for she too has acted treacherously." When Judah observed, the Prophet notes, the deception of her sister and the judgment brought upon her for it, she did not hesitate to replicate her deceit but instead chose to follow her example.
