The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

The Lord's displeasure was directed towards those who would not enter the land they had rejected, a consequence of their lack of faith, as noted in Numbers 14:29. However, their children and wives, who remained silent and innocent due to their age and gender, were destined to inherit the promised land. Thus, all individuals aged twenty and above perished in the wilderness, while the judgement upon others was postponed. Meanwhile, those who associated with Jesus but incited the people met swift retribution from the Lord, as stated in Numbers 14:37. Jesus and Caleb, as described in Numbers 14:6, entered the promised land alongside the innocent. The more righteous choice favored glory over mere salvation, while the less noble choice opted for salvation over honor. God's judgment affirmed the righteousness of those who valued honor above material gain and condemned those who pursued what they deemed essential for salvation, yet neglected the pursuit of honor.
