The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

The Lord’s wrath was directed towards those who had scorned the land He promised, resulting in the consequence of their disbelief (Num. 14:29). However, their children and wives, who did not grumble and were blameless due to their age and gender, were destined to receive the promised inheritance. Consequently, all individuals aged twenty and older perished in the wilderness, while the punishment of others was postponed. Meanwhile, those who accompanied Jesus and incited the people faced immediate judgment from the Lord (Num. 14:37). Jesus and Caleb (Num. 14:6) entered the promised land alongside the innocent, exempt from blame. In this scenario, the superior choice favored glory over mere salvation, while the inferior choice sought salvation over honor. Ultimately, God’s judgment affirmed the righteousness of those prioritizing honor over fleeting gain, condemning those who chose what they believed was essential for salvation yet fell short of seeking honor.
