One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Once the people turned away from idol worship and vowed to devote themselves to the one true God who delivered them, the most sacred Jesus responded by saying: "You cannot serve the Lord, .... For God is holy and a jealous God who will not overlook your transgressions and your wickedness. If you abandon the Lord and worship foreign gods, when He arrives, He will bring bitterness upon you and consume you rather than do you good. Do not think you will reap the blessings while engaging in wrongdoing. The Lord God possesses the power not only to show favor but also to bring punishment upon the wrongdoer."
