The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

When the people turned away from the worship of false deities and committed themselves to serve the one true God who had redeemed them, the most exalted Jesus responded, saying: “You cannot serve the Lord... For God is holy and a jealous God, who will not overlook your sins and transgressions. If you abandon the Lord and worship foreign gods, when He comes, He will bring bitterness upon you and destroy you instead of doing you good. Do not think that you will receive these blessings while engaging in wrongdoing. The Lord God is fully capable of both bestowing grace and administering justice to the wrongdoer."
