After obtaining the pledge from the Jews, Samson emerged from the ravine and departed from his rocky refuge. Upon noticing the formidable Philistines approaching, despite being bound with heavy chains, he found courage and shattered his restraints. Then, seizing the jawbone of a donkey that lay nearby, he struck down a thousand men with it, sending the rest into retreat, showcasing divine might, as a multitude of armed warriors fell before a solitary unarmed man. Anyone who attempted to draw near met swift defeat, while those fleeing were spared from death. Therefore, this site came to be known as Ramath-lehi, as it was here that Samson achieved a significant victory through his incredible strength.

Oh, if only he had displayed the same moderation in his moment of triumph as he did in his combat against foes! Yet, often it is the case that a spirit unaccustomed to prosperity, instead of recognizing God’s grace and protection in their success, wrongly ascribes it to personal prowess; thus he proclaimed, “With the jaw of an ass I killed a thousand men.” He did not build an altar nor offer a sacrifice to the Lord, but instead claimed all the glory for himself, naming the location ‘The Jawbone’ to etch his victory into his legacy.
