The Church Fathers on this verse

Judges 15:19Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Then the Lord opened a great tooth in the jaw of the ass and waters issued out of it. And when he had drunk them, he refreshed his spirit, and recovered his strength. Therefore the name of that place was called The Spring of him that invoked from the jawbone, until this present day.

Ambrose of Milan

By the grace of God, when Samson cast down his jawbone, a fissure emerged, and water gushed forth from it. He drank and was revitalized in spirit, naming the location ‘Spring of Calling,’ as it was there that he found forgiveness for his pride in his victories through prayer. A swift transformation occurred within him; pride was promptly humbled, and humility was restored without harm.

Caesarius of Arles

6th centuryChurch Father

Though we may have felt parched due to the absence of God's grace, we were still destined to become sources of living water. In a moment of desperation, Samson called out to the Lord, and from the jaw of a donkey, water sprang forth. This miraculous event mirrors what has occurred in us, as the Lord declared: "Whosoever believeth in Me, with him ... rivers of living water will flow from his belly" (John 7:38).
