Ambrose of Milan

Before long, he experienced an intense thirst. There was no refreshment available, and it became unbearable. He then understood that even what is attainable for an average person requires divine assistance, so he fervently cried out and prayed to the Almighty, beseeching that he not be held accountable for his thoughtless words. He entrusted his triumph to God, declaring, "Thou hast made this great salvation by the hand of Thy servant; now help me, for I am dying of thirst. My thirst has placed me in the hands of those over whom Thou hast granted me complete victory."

Caesarius of Arles

6th centuryChurch Father

Although we were parched due to the absence of God's grace, we were yet worthy of transformation into springs and flowing waters. In that moment, Samson cried out in prayer, and water burst forth from the jawbone of a donkey. This miraculous event clearly mirrors what has occurred within us, as the Lord declared, “Whosoever believeth in Me, with him ... rivers of living water will flow from his belly” (John 7:38).
