Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

Upon exiting the house, the Levite noticed her resting at the threshold, assuming her downcast gaze was due to shame. He sought to console her, recognizing that her humiliation was not by her own choice but was inflicted upon her through a brutal affront. He encouraged her to rise and accompany him back home. However, there was silence, leading him to attempt to awaken her with a loud voice, believing she might be in slumber. When he ultimately comprehended that she had died, he placed her lifeless form upon a donkey, transported her back, dismembered her into twelve parts, and dispatched the pieces to all the tribes of Israel.
