Upon exiting the house, the Levite noticed her lying on the threshold and assumed that she remained silent in her shame. He sought to console her, recognizing that her humiliation was not of her choosing but a result of brutal treatment. He encouraged her to rise and come back with him, but received no response. Believing she was merely asleep, he called out loudly to her. It was only upon realizing that she had passed away that he took her lifeless body, placed it on a donkey, returned home, and then divided it into twelve parts, sending these portions to all the tribes of Israel.
